The benefits of nature in education

Nature has a powerful impact on our mental health. This is widely acknowledged. In the context of education there is a growing body of research that supports this. For example, a recent study found that children raised with greener environments have a 55% lower risk of developing mental disorders.

Children’s mental health, learning ability, and educational outcomes will be significantly improved if they are allowed to experience nature regularly both inside and outside the classroom. This power can be unlocked by applying biophilic principles to the classrooms.

The concept of biophilic design

Biophilic design uses architectural techniques to integrate natural elements in a building whenever possible, allowing its occupants an easy connection with nature. This practice is divided into three main components:

  • Nature in your space. The interior will be brightened by maximising natural light and fresh air, and natural elements like potted plants and green walls, as well as aquariums and other natural elements, such a potted plant, are also included.
  • Analogies of nature. When possible, buildings should be built using natural materials, such as wood or stone. These can be enhanced by shapes, patterns, and colours that are reminiscent of nature. Photographs, murals, and other artwork that depicts nature can enhance these elements. • Natural space simulation. Spatial configurations must aim to mimic spaces found in nature, which are naturally appealing to us, like cosy nooks and sweeping corridors.

The biophilic design of classrooms stimulates students’ ability and willingness to learn, by encouraging their development in several key areas.

  • Sensory and motor development. Students can be inspired by adding sensory elements to the natural world.
  • Stress and fatigue. Noise and open-plan classrooms are mentally draining, but exposure to nature can provide respite.
  • Cognitive ability and emotional wellbeing. Nature can enhance learning environments.
  • Attention spans, ADHD. Biophilic classrooms can have a positive impact on learning. They increase attendance, improve test scores, and focus.
