How Care Worker Jobs Help with Personal Care

Washing and Dressing

Assisting clients with washing and dressing including assisting clients to bath, shower or bed-bath using warm water and mild soap. Supporting clients to dress, including choices around personal items such as underwear, socks and pants.

Oral Hygiene

Brush clients’ teeth and clean their dentures daily. Rinse out care equipment and put it away after use. Be aware of clients’ oral sensitive areas and of any signs of oral discomfort or change and report to the clients’ nurse and/or family members as appropriate.

Moving and Handling

As mentioned earlier, repositioning clients safely is fundamental to both your own health and that of your client. Techniques for moving and handling are covered as part of your training and you will get practised before you start work on your own.

Skin and Pressure Care

When turning your client care worker, look for reddening of the skin on bony areas of their body, i.e. heels and hips. An early reporting of such signs can prevent pressure sores developing.

Continence Care

Help with toileting and change soiled pads in a calm manner. This should be done without drawing attention to the situation and the client should be given privacy at all times.
