How to save energy in the home

Saving energy is a significant concern for most households, because of both the high cost of electricity, and because of the environmental impact of burning fossil fuels. There are many ways that you can try and reduce your energy consumption.

Draught proofing

Hot air escapes and cold air enters through gaps around your windows, doors, chimneys, cracks in the floor and skirting, letterboxes, keyholes and even an electric meter box such as the ones at //www.meterbox.co.uk/electric-meter-boxes. Close curtains, block or cover holes and cracks, and install professional draught proofing.

Heating

Place radiators carefully, where they are not blocked. Set a timer so heating only comes on when needed, and turn down radiators in unused rooms. Turn the temperature on your combi boiler down to 60°C.

Water

Fewer baths means less energy spent heating water. Similarly, cutting the length of time in the shower can improve efficiency. In the kitchen, only boil the water you need.

Lighting

Replacing old lightbulbs with LED options can improve energy efficiency and reduce costs. When you are not in the room, switch lights off completely to save even more electricity.

Appliances and devices

Try to only use your washing machine and dishwasher once a week, and where possible dry your clothes on a line or clotheshorse rather than in a tumble drier. For microwaves, computers, phones and other smart devices, ensure they are unplugged when not charging or in use.

Following these steps can reduce your energy bills and make your home more environmentally friendly, both of which are highly desirable outcomes.
