Whether the boiler is powered by oil, electricity or gas, boilers work in the same way. Fuel enters a chamber for combustion, which is ignited. The ignition energy is transferred to the heat exchanger, which runs along a pipe or chamber holding the cold water. Energy from water heats the fuel ignited. Depending on your heating system, the hot water is used in different ways. If you have a combi boiler, the water is pumped to other parts of your house immediately. For conventional boilers and systems, hot water travels en route to a dedicated cylinder for storage.

When heating your home, the heated water is pumped to radiators located throughout the building. After passing through the radiator, the heat has been transferred to the surrounding space, and cold water is then pumped back to the boiler.

Alternatively, it is sent to a water outlet in your home when needed. In most cases, this is the bathroom, shower and kitchen taps.
