How to Prepare for your First MOT

If you are new to driving, you will probably not be familiar with taking your car for an MOT. If this is your first time, you have probably been looking into the process and have found a garage such as Gloucester MOT company Swift fit who will carry out the MOT on your car for you. Here are a few things to think about before your car goes for its MOT…

Check all of your mirrors – To pass the MOT all of your car’s mirrors must be intact. Clean your mirrors and check that there are no cracks in them. Also clean off any marks that could obscure your vision.

Are any warning lights on? If warning lights come on, you should immediately check the handbook for your vehicle to see what it means and what action should be taken. Occasionally however, lights can come on and if you check everything you may still not be able to find a problem. The engine light on some cars can do this, and this can sometimes be caused by dirt on a sensor. It is always best to have someone check for you, as a light on is a fail.

Check your oil and water – Oil and water levels are essential to the smooth running of your car and must be maintained regularly anyway. Before an MOT the oil level is particularly important as the garage needs to check your cars emission levels.

Check all of your Lights – Driving with any of your lights not working is illegal and the police will stop you if they see you so it is good practice to check your lights on a regular basis and also carry spare bulbs in the car with you.
