Checking your Boiler Pressure Before Winter

Now that the weather is getting colder, it is time to start using the heating again to keep the house warm. When you haven’t used your heating for a while, it is wise to get a professional like this boiler installation Cheltenham based company to come and check that it is all in good working order and to make sure that it is safe to use. This way, if you need to make repairs to it, or if you need a new boiler, you can get it all done before the very cold weather arrives.

Something that people often find when they go to turn their heating back on after a long period of time of it being off, is the fact that the boiler pressure is not right. The pressure of your boiler needs to be right as it plays an important role in ensuring your water makes its way around the system and into all of the places that it is needed.

To check your boiler pressure, look at the gauge on the boiler that looks like a small dial with numbers around it. The section that is highlighted in green is what the ideal boiler pressure is, so if your pressure is above or below this then your boiler will not be able to work correctly. Ideal pressure is usually around 1 – 1.5 bar.

If the pressure is too high, then this could be down to problems with a pressure release valve, the boiler expansion vessel or the system could be overfilling. If this is the case, firstly you should bleed the radiators, as this may solve the problem. If it doesn’t then you should call in a heating engineer to have a look at what is wrong.

If the pressure is too low, you may have a leak in your system somewhere or you might have a fault with the radiators. This can often happen when the heating hasn’t been used in a while, but if your boiler loses pressure after it has been repressurised then you should have an engineer take a look at it as there is likely to be a fault within the boiler itself.
